Fashion is an opportunity for creative self-expression while making conscious choices that benefit both ourselves and the environment. Think of yourself as a blank canvas, how do you want to show up in the world?
Traditionally, fashion has been consistent with disposable trends and excessive consumption. The rise of sustainable fashion has challenged this notion by emphasizing longevity, ethical production, mindful consumption, and local businesses. Sustainable fashion encourages us to redefine our relationship with clothing and to think twice about the fabrics that come into contact with our bodies. Thrift stores, consignment shops, and online platforms offer a treasure trove of unique and pre-loved garments waiting to find a new home.
FInding creative ways to reduce waste and promote sustainability is essential to my values. One way I engage in this notion is by giving old hats new love and upcycling. Upcycling is the process of transforming discarded materials into new, valuable products. This allows me to embrace sustainable style, curate one-of-a-kind pieces and contribute to a more circular economy. Sometimes I reshape the brim, add embellishments – such as stones, seashells, broken pieces of jewelry I have saved, or combine different techniques such as pyrography or free hand painting.
My goal for engaging in these projects is to show the transformative power of repurposing, while adding my personal touch. By embracing upcycling, we can showcase our authentic selves while treading lightly on the planet.
